The Black History Month program event honors the life and legacy of the Kentucky native.

A pioneer in theatre, Brown is internationally recognized as the first African-American novelist and playwright. An escaped freed-slave and abolitionist, his play The Escape or a Leap for Freedom (1858), became an informative and creative vehicle for marginalized performers. It also served as a springboard for audiences’ reflections and discussions.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available immediately following the performance.

The program is sponsored by the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, the Margaret Rice Professional Development Fund and the Eagle Diversity Education Center.

Additional information is available by contacting Dr. T.N. Izlar, assistant professor of theatre, at 606-783-2694.
