Clayton hosts service-learning workshops at MSU this month

Morehead State University not only provides a high-quality academic experience, but it also provides opportunities for students to do so while giving back to the community. This month, MSU faculty and staff will get the chance to learn how to better implement service-learning in the classroom and on campus. Dr. Patti Clayton will lead service-learning workshops on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Room 325 in the Adron Doran University Center (ADUC).

The first workshop, titled "Integrated Design of Service-Learning Projects and Courses," will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Following a lunch break from noon to 1:15 p.m., there will be a second workshop, "Integrated Design of Critical Reflection and Assessment of Learning," that takes place from 1:15 to 4 p.m. MSU faculty and staff will have the registration fee waived and the registration deadline is 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15.

Dr. Patti H. Clayton is an independent consultant with PHC Ventures and has 20 years of experience as a practitioner-scholar and educational developer in both service-learning and community engagement (SLCE) and experiential education. She has consulted with well over 100 colleges, universities and higher education organizations in the U.S., Canada and Ireland. Having integrated service-learning into a variety of her courses, Clayton co-developed the DEAL Model for Critical Reflection, the SOFAR partnership model, the TRES protocol for assessing partnership quality and work on Democratically Engaged Assessment (DEA).

Louise Cooper, the service-learning coordinator with MSU's Office of Service-Learning, said the University's adoption of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) centered around experiential education offers the opportunity to bring a nationally published researcher like Clayton to campus.

"My hope is that faculty members who attend one or both of these workshops will leave with skills and ideas they can apply in the classroom and that may ultimately further their research agendas," she said.
