MSU, Kentucky National Guard sign educational partnership

Morehead State University has a long-standing reputation for supporting veterans, active military, and military-connected families pursuing a college education. MSU recently earned the 2024-25 College of Distinction status as one of the Best Colleges for Military Support.

Morehead State is continuing to assist active military students who have provided sacrifice and service to our country. MSU and the Kentucky Army National Guard signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to renew a partnership supporting citizen soldiers as they earn their degrees. A formal signing took place Monday, May 5.

“Morehead State has a long history of working with our active duty and veteran students as well as a strong ROTC program,” said MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan. “This agreement with the Kentucky National Guard affirms our commitment to provide opportunities and support for service members to continue their education and achieve their career goals.”

This mutually beneficial partnership helps foster a culture of military support on campus while providing students serving in the Kentucky Army National Guard an even greater college experience with increased preparation for their careers after graduation.

Benefits to Kentucky Army National Guard students include:

  • Assistance with maximizing the Soldiers Joint Service Transcript credits to ensure soldiers finish their educational goals.
  • Placement on an advanced access Course Registration list for earlier registration.
  • Dedicated office space for a full-time National Guard professor of military science and a full-time recruiter.
  • Support through the LTC Alan R. Baldwin Veterans Resource Center, which provides one-on-one guidance along with assistance in completing educational benefit requirements and accessing on-campus, local, state and federal benefits.

The Kentucky Army National Guard provides MSU with a full-time officer to serve as a professor of military science and liaison to MSU’s Army ROTC Program. KYARNG also provides opportunities and resources to the Department of Military Science and ROTC cadets for educational and career fairs and email support. They also provide equipment and personnel for military-focused events on campus and aid in MSU recruitment efforts to bring in new and returning students.

Morehead State will also receive full State Tuition Assistance based on in-state tuition, which is available to any active Kentucky Army National Guard member who is accepted and enrolled at MSU. This MOU will last for five years, with the possibility of an additional five-year extension following a joint evaluation.

“The KYNG and MSU enter this partnership to support our veterans and their family members in achieving their educational goals," said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Haldane B. Lamberton, Kentucky’s adjutant general. “We’re committed to ensuring access to the resources and services that enable them to complete their degree program while supporting our state and nation through military service.”

Morehead State University is nationally recognized as one of the nation's top military- and veteran-friendly schools. We strive to provide veteran students with the support and resources they need to be successful.
