Morehead State student accepted to KDLA internship program

Morehead State University student Arwen Sergent, a senior public history major from Mayking, has been accepted into the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives (KDLA) competitive internship program. This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in archiving and library science, preparing her for a future career as a librarian or archivist.

Sergent, a student employee in the Special Collections & Archives at MSU’s Camden-Carroll Library since her freshman year, has long aspired to a career in library science. Her acceptance into this internship marks a significant step toward her professional goals.

The KDLA internship will provide Sergent with practical training and professional networking opportunities, allowing her to build on the skills she has developed at MSU. This experience will be invaluable as she prepares for graduate studies in Library Science and a career in the field.

“The internship at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives is an amazing opportunity,” said Sergent. “I have had a work-study position here in the campus archive since my freshman year and have wanted to pursue a Master of Library Science since high school. I’ve always had a deep appreciation for libraries since I was a small child, and knew by high school that I wanted to become a librarian or an archivist. This internship gives me the chance to make some great connections and learn a lot this summer. I was beyond ecstatic when I got the email offering me the position. Getting this experience before I even start grad school is just absolutely amazing.”

Associate Professor of History Dr. Adrian Mandzy says, “MSU's public history program prepares students for a fulfilling career by providing them with real-life work experiences - from direct involvement in cutting-edge research to unique study abroad opportunities. In her time at MSU, Arwen has studied while walking across the ruins of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, excavated a Civil War battery in Georgia, explored the Nazi Death Camps in Auschwitz, Poland and worked under the direct supervision of the head of special collections at the Camden-Carroll Library.”

Sergent’s achievement exemplifies students’ success in the program and highlights MSU’s commitment to fostering experiential education and professional development opportunities.
