MSU Rifle receives grant for new scoring system
Morehead State University’s nationally ranked co-ed rifle team will receive funding to improve the experience for MSU student-athletes, competitors, and spectators.
Through the MidwayUSA Foundation’s Range Development Fund, MSU Rifle received a grant totaling $58,130. This amount will cover nearly half the cost of a new scoring system courtesy of Megalink, a Norwegian company that is one of the leading suppliers of electronic scoring systems globally.
MSU Rifle Head Coach Alan Joseph, who is entering his 12th season, said they have utilized an electronic scoring system previously built and installed by former Head Coach Walt Rybka. As time passed, many of MSU Rifle’s top competing schools adopted Megalink electronic scoring systems.
With assistance from Senior Grants Specialist Nellie Middleton with MSU’s Office of Research & Sponsored Programs, Joseph’s application for the MidwayUSA Foundation’s Range Development Fund was in the top 5 of the 140 applications. With the grant funding and an advance from the MSU Foundation to cover the remaining cost, MSU Rifle plans to install the scoring system within one year.
“The big schools are up-to-date and have the infrastructure to make such a large purchase and to stay up to date on target systems,” Joseph said. “Our equipment needed an update, and it was kind of our turn.”
For a team currently ranked 17th in the country, Joseph is happy to get the technology needed to provide an optimal experience for MSU team members and their supporters.
“We were kind of behind the curve, and once it’s all installed...it will bring us light years forward in being able to run the ranges and have an up-to-date system,” Joseph said. “It’s just a huge improvement for our program.”
