MSU hosts Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers

Rogers Scholars 2025Morehead State University once again hosted some of Kentucky's most promising high schoolers last month as it welcomed programs for Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers.

MSU welcomed 49 Rogers Scholars to campus in June. The flagship program for the Center for Rural Development, created through the vision of U.S. Congressman Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05), provides leadership and scholarship opportunities for rising high school juniors in eastern and southern Kentucky to help produce future leaders in business and entrepreneurship.

The Rogers Scholars program was housed in the newly renovated Cooper Hall. The students participated in several activities, including presentations from Kentucky Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman, Morehead Mayor Laura White-Brown, and MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan, among others.

They also received etiquette training from the Center for Career Development & Experiential Education Director Megan Boone and participated in major sessions covering healthcare, engineering and space science.

The Rogers Explorers program, also organized by the Center for Rural Development, included 30 ninth-grade students who explored their interests in science, math, and technology. Students participated in three major sessions on agriscience, entrepreneurship, and space science. There was also a presentation from the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science & Mathematics, MSU's dual-credit, residential STEM+X academy for rising high school juniors and seniors.

"It was such a pleasure to have both the Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers on campus again this summer," said Randy Manis (Class of 2006, 2008), coordinator of summer camps at MSU. "Many of these students reside in our service region, so it is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our campus and several of our academic programs."

MSU first hosted the Rogers Scholars and Rogers Explorers in 2019. Students from the Center for Rural Development's 45-county service area may apply to become Rogers Explorers during their eighth-grade year and Rogers Scholars during their sophomore year.
