Dickerson Scholarship Endowment will support Ashland students
The MSU Foundation is honored to announce plans for the Dr. Bette J. Dickerson Scholarship Endowment.
Dr. Bette J. Dickerson (Class of 1972) grew up in Ashland. During high school, she visited MSU multiple times for various summer programs and to visit her cousin, Sandra Miller Banks (Class of 1962) and Dr. Marshall Banks (Class of 1962). As a student at MSU, Dickerson was involved on campus and was a founding member of the Eta Omicron chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.
After graduation, Dickerson began teaching in Louisville. She had a successful career in philanthropic and nonprofit organizations before returning to academia and holding a long tenure at American University. Before retiring as associate professor emerita, Dickerson served in various roles, including chair of the sociology department, director of the women’s and gender studies program, and the Office of Campus Life’s associate vice president for student engagement. Throughout her career, she had the opportunity to mentor and advocate for countless students. She was named the A. Wade Smith Award recipient for her outstanding teaching, mentoring and service.
To honor her commitment to higher education, Dickerson established the Dr. Bette J. Dickerson Scholarship Endowment via her estate plans. Once funded, the scholarship will be awarded to incoming first-year students from her hometown of Ashland.
“Dr. Dickerson’s foresight in including MSU in her estate plans is so meaningful,” says Allison Caudill (Class of 2005, 2009), vice president for university advancement. “Her commitment ensures that her passion for higher education will continue for generations to come.”
