Joey Bryant named MSU veteran affairs coordinator
Morehead State University has named Joey Bryant (Class of 2011, 2017) its new veteran affairs coordinator and adult/military admissions counselor.
A native of Floyd County, Bryant enlisted in the Kentucky Army National Guard after the events of 9/11. From 2003 to 2009, he served as a 12B/combat engineer with the 577th Sapper Company in Prestonsburg. During this time, he was deployed to Kosovo (2004-05) and Afghanistan (2008-09) to support Operation Enduring Freedom.
Bryant earned an Associate in Applied Science in Surveying and Mapping from Big Sandy Community & Technical College in 2005 before enrolling at MSU, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and History in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Social Sciences in 2017.
Bryant worked for MSU from 2011 to 2018, as a transfer coordinator and later as a records processing coordinator and VA certifying official. He joined the Eagle Battalion (MSU Army ROTC) as a human resource assistant in 2018, helping serve and guide ROTC students before taking on his new position.
"We're thrilled to have Joey return to MSU as the primary contact person for adult/military students. His previous background with the Kentucky National Guard and ROTC, as well as his experience as a transfer coordinator, make him the perfect fit to serve our students," said Jen Timmermann (Class of 2003, 2007), director of adult and transfer admissions. "He's committed to student success and to enhancing the student experience, which will most certainly benefit every Eagle he meets."
Bryant will oversee the LTC Alan R. Baldwin Veterans Center and work with students that are veterans, active military and military-connected to make their enrollment to MSU as seamless as possible.
He said that in his previous experience with the Eagle Battalion, he was fulfilled by ensuring the success of every cadet meeting and maintaining both Army and MSU standards to graduate and become commissioned officers. Now, he wants to bring a similar passion and focus to his new role for veterans, active military personnel, and military-affiliated families who want to become Eagles.
"I am greatly humbled and excited to return back to MSU in this new role," Bryant said. "(My goal is) making sure the best resources are available for all of our military-affiliated students to be successful toward their academic endeavors while attending MSU."
