MSU to host series of events for Constitution Day

Morehead State University will mark Constitution Day with a week of events designed to help students reflect on civic engagement, and the ongoing importance of the U.S. Constitution.

The celebrations, hosted by the Department of History, Philosophy, Politics, Global Studies & Legal Studies, begin Monday, Sept. 15, continue through Thursday, Sept. 18.

“We encourage everyone, students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community, to come to these public events,” said Dr. Douglas Mock, assistant professor of political science.

Constitution Day, celebrated each September, gives students a chance to learn more about the U.S. Constitution, their rights, and how this document affects both the past and present. For many MSU students—especially those voting for the first time or new to civic life—the events offer an easy way to get involved and understand how democracy works.

“This year, we are emphasizing student participation, and to that end, have several opportunities for students to actively take part,” said Mock.

The highlight of the week is Wednesday, Sept. 17, when the Honorable Robert Conley, deputy chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, delivers the Constitution Day keynote address at 1 p.m. in ADUC Room 329. Earlier that day, students, faculty, and staff will gather at noon at the Little Bell Tower for a public reading of the Constitution.

Department Chair and Professor of Political Science Dr. James Masterson emphasized the broader importance of the week.

“I see Constitution Day as a valuable opportunity for our students to reflect deeply on what the U.S. Constitution means to them personally and professionally,” Masterson said. “These events create space to consider how interpretations of this founding document shape their lives, careers, and the overall stability of our nation.”
