MSU Vet Tech program named AVTE Program of the Year

Veterinary Technology Program PictureMorehead State's veterinary technology program is known for its academic quality and career preparation. It’s ranked as the best vet tech program in Kentucky and ranked #13 nationwide and has received another honor confirming its status as one of the country's best.

The Association of Veterinary Technician Educators (AVTE) named MSU's vet tech program its Program of the Year at its 2025 Professional Awards during its annual conference in Louisville.

The Association of Veterinary Technician Educators is the leading advocate for veterinary technician educators. AVTE's Professional Awards highlight excellence in veterinary technology leadership, collaboration, innovation, and clinical education. Winners were chosen through a blinded committee review process supported by a quantitative scoring system facilitated by AVTE's management team.

"The AVTE Program of the Year Award is offered to veterinary technician education programs that have demonstrated exceptional strength in working collaboratively to generate creative learning opportunities for their students," said Dr. Amy Staton (Class of 2003, 2004, 2013), associate professor of veterinary technology. "The faculty of the MSU veterinary technology program has always strived to provide a top-quality education to all our students."

As part of Morehead State University's campus revitalization plan, MSU is updating its veterinary technology program's facilities at the Derrickson Agricultural Complex. The University is expanding the building to improve the laboratory and classroom spaces, with renovations slated for completion by December 2025.

"This renovation and expansion will further support the educational experience of our students," Staton said. "Graduates from our program are highly desirable in a competitive profession, and we hope this expanded space will allow us to train and educate more students."
