MSU student debuting ant-themed art exhibit
The Golding-Yang Art Gallery at Morehead State University invites visitors to explore the world of ants through “Myrmecoportraiture: Experience the Enchanting World of Ants,” an exhibition by Josiah Kilburn (senior biology student from Castle Rock, Colorado).
The show runs Oct. 6–30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Claypool-Young Art Building.
An artist talk will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. in Claypool-Young Room 111, followed by a reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Golding-Yang Gallery.
“Myrmecoportraiture” is a unique blend of art and science that invites audiences to see ants as they’ve never seen before. The exhibition features stunning macro photographs of ants from around the world, live colonies, preserved specimens, and interactive displays designed to engage in all five senses. Visitors can explore how scientists study ants through hands-on activities, sensory experiences, including even the distinct smells of ant species, and immersive habitats created by Kilburn.
Kilburn, who developed his passion for ants while growing up in Colorado, has spent years studying their behavior and ecology. His fascination with their complex societies inspired him to go beyond traditional scientific imaging and present ants in a more artistic and expressive way. By pairing his biological studies with photography courses and mentorship from Associate Professor of Photography and Digital Art Dr. Robyn Moore, Kilburn has cultivated a distinctive style that captures the beauty and intricacy of ants’ daily lives.
“When visiting this exhibit attendees will engage all their senses as they are confronted with the passion of Josiah Kilburn’s study of ants,” said Mike Bowen, instructor of art and director of the Golding-Yang Gallery.
In addition to his photographic work, Kilburn has composed music, designed tactile habitats, and created museum-style installations to immerse audiences in the hidden world beneath our feet.
The exhibition and events are free and open to the public.
