Morehead State Honors Alum Phil Simms with Stadium Naming
Morehead State University proudly celebrated a landmark moment during Homecoming 2025 with the official naming of Phil Simms Stadium, honoring one of its most distinguished alumni and NFL football legend Phil Simms (Class of 2015). The dedication ceremony was held on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The event began with a ceremony outside the stadium, where MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan welcomed hundreds of alums, fans, students and community members to campus in a tribute to Simms' legacy.
Director of Athletics Kelly Wells (Class of 1995) introduced Simms by saying, "Few people, if anyone, have brought as much recognition to Morehead State University as Phil Simms." He said, "Not every school can say they have a Super Bowl MVP in their alumni family, but MSU can. Since his time here, Phil has dedicated time and resources to continuing the support of the Blue and Gold. He hosts camps in the summertime, visits with our coaching staff and athletes, and made Morehead State a priority in his life."
Simms reflected on his journey from student-athlete at MSU to Super Bowl MVP and NFL icon, recognized the many former teammates, friends and their families who returned to campus for this celebration and expressed how much this recognition means to him.
"If I had to name my 10 to 15 closest friends in life, they would all be from here," Simms said. "I can never get the words that really capture everything I want you to know... I'm a part of Morehead State, the school, the town and of course the football team."
Simms' contributions to MSU span decades, including hosting youth football camps, mentoring players and coaches, and supporting fundraising efforts that have significantly advanced the Eagles football program. His return to campus in 2015 to complete his degree and receive an honorary doctorate further cemented his lifelong commitment to the University.
"Phil Simms embodies the spirit of Morehead State," President Morgan said. "His story is one of perseverance, excellence, and loyalty. This stadium naming is a tribute to his impact on our campus and beyond."
The newly named Phil Simms Stadium stands as a symbol of pride for the MSU community and a lasting reminder of the University's tradition of excellence in athletics and alumni achievement.
