MSU celebrates topping Science & Engineering Building

As Morehead State University continues to revitalize and reshape its growing campus, it recently marked a significant milestone with a Building Topping Ceremony for the new 123,000-square-foot Science & Engineering Building.

This event celebrated the structural completion of the state-of-the-art facility, highlighting the University’s commitment to advancing innovation and academic excellence.

MSU students had the unique opportunity to sign the final structural beam, proudly displayed in the Prefontaine Tower of the Adron Doran University Center. Faculty, staff and administrators joined them, alongside the construction team, for photo opportunities and to celebrate this milestone in the project.

"This is an incredible opportunity for our students to leave their mark on a defining moment in Morehead State’s history as we continue to enhance and transform our campus," said MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan. "When this facility is completed, it will provide an even greater learning experience for students and further our goal to become the best public regional university in the South."

Representatives from Whiting -Turner Contracting Company, Champlain/EOP, Cannon Design and Brown + Kubican Structural Engineers later gathered with campus leaders to view the placement of the final steel beam.

Located behind the Howell-McDowell Administration Building between 2nd Street and University Street, the $98 million Science & Engineering Building will prepare students for the 21st-century job market and contribute to the region's economic transformation.

This facility will house academic programs in the College of Science & Engineering, including biology, chemistry, physics, geoscience, computer science, engineering and manufacturing. Upon completion, it will replace Lappin Hall and Lloyd-Cassity Building.

"Construction is progressing right on schedule,” said Kim Oatman, associate vice president for capital construction and chief facilities officer. “This building represents a major investment in our students’ future, and we’re excited to see it taking shape."

The project is funded by a $98 million capital investment approved by the Kentucky General Assembly in the 2022–2024 biennial budget. Completion is expected in 2027.
