KFAC hosts exhibit for MSU instructor John Flavell

John Flavell PictureThe Kentucky Folk Art Center is currently hosting the exhibit “Music of the Mountains” featuring work by John Flavell (Class of 1987), photographer and MSU instructor of speech and media production & journalism.

The exhibit runs through Thursday, April 2. There will be an artist talk with Flavell, along with curator and fellow photographer Steve Shaffer (Class of 1992), from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22. A closing reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 2.

Flavell was chief photographer for 24 years at The Daily Independent in Ashland and a CNHI state editor through that newspaper for five years. For seven years, he contracted with news outlets such as the Associated Press, Lexington Herald-Leader, The Daily Independent, Louisville Courier-Journal, and Kentucky Today. His work has also appeared in The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Flavell won first place in The Kentucky News Photographers Association’s 2012 and 2014 for News Picture Story, and third place for News Picture Story in 2017. Flavell continues to teach photography and classes in media and journalism at MSU.

In “Music of the Mountains,” Flavell’s photographs chronicle the subjects, lives, and stories he has captured since moving to Kentucky in the mid-1970s after traveling much of his life growing up in a military family.

“My mantra became: travel when I want, but build an adopted homeplace,” Flavell said in his artist statement. “This place—these mountains—gave me room to explore the beauty of Eastern Kentucky, the stories of Appalachia, and the fabric of the region.”

The Kentucky Folk Art Center is located at 102 West First Street in Morehead. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
