Morehead State staff member earns national fraud prevention honor

Kelly Waite, program coordinator for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Senior Medicare Patrol at Morehead State University, has been named a national Fraud Prevention’s Finest award recipient for December 2025.

Each month, the national Senior Medicare Patrol selects one individual from all 50 states and four U.S. territories for the honor. Waite was chosen for her creative outreach methods, strong leadership, and measurable impact across Eastern Kentucky.

“I've been with the Kentucky Senior Medicare Patrol for just over two years. I get to work with older adults, which I love! I educate them on how to stay safe and look out for Medicare fraud and consumer scams targeted at older adults,” Waite said. “I enjoy incorporating my love for music, dance, and fitness into my presentations to make education fun and memorable for my seniors! I enjoy helping people for my job.”

Waite manages the Senior Medicare Patrol program for 15 counties in northeastern Kentucky, where she leads a team of approximately 40 volunteers. In 2025, the team contributed more than 1,400 hours of service and conducted 79 group education and outreach events, reaching more than 3,000 individuals. These efforts focused on educating Medicare beneficiaries about fraud prevention and awareness, while also providing individualized assistance to help resolve suspected fraud cases.

In addition to community education, Waite reports potential fraud cases to the Office of Inspector General for further investigation, helping ensure that concerns raised by seniors are addressed through appropriate federal channels.

National program leaders praised Waite’s ability to combine creativity with results, noting that her work exemplifies the mission of the Senior Medicare Patrol to empower beneficiaries and protect Medicare resources.
