Morehead State Theatre presents 'Pride and Prejudice'
MSU’s Department of Music & Theatre will bring a fresh, high-energy adaptation of a literary classic to the stage with Kate Hamill’s “Pride and Prejudice,” based on the novel by Jane Austen. The student-directed production, led by Meredith Fraley, a senior theatre major from Russell, runs Feb. 26–28 at 7:30 p.m. and March 1 at 2 p.m. in the Lucille Caudill Little Theater.
While many audiences are familiar with the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, this production offers a contemporary interpretation of the classic novel. Hamill’s adaptation reframes the romance with a heightened focus on social satire and physical comedy, presenting Austen’s themes through a fast-paced, modern lens.
In this version, Lizzy Bennet firmly resists the societal expectation to marry, even as her encounters with the proud and enigmatic Mr. Darcy challenge her resolve. The result is a dynamic retelling that emphasizes both the humor and social commentary at the heart of Austen’s work.
“At its heart, Jane Austen's “Pride and Prejudice” has always been more of a social commentary than it is a romance novel. Kate Hamill's stage adaptation highlights the pre-existing social aspects and at the same time heightens the ‘comedy’ in ‘rom-com,’” said Fraley.
Tickets are cash or check only and are priced at $15 for adults and $10 for faculty, senior citizens, MSU Theatre alumni and non-MSU students. Admission is free for MSU students with a valid student ID and for patrons.
