MSU Ed.D. program provides educators with tools to lead

Morehead State University continues its legacy for preparing impactful education professionals with its online Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program. This program provides the convenience of online learning (plus one short, in-person seminar) with the expertise of MSU’s faculty mentors.

MSU's Ed.D. program prepares educators and professionals with aspirations for administrative leadership to become skilled practitioners and visionary leaders while balancing the responsibilities of a teaching career and personal commitments.

"What truly sets this Ed.D. apart is its blend of flexibility, regional relevance, and research-informed practice," said Dr. Timothy Simpson (Class of 1995), Chair for MSU's Department of Foundational and Graduate Studies in Education. "Offered primarily online with a brief on-campus seminar, the program allows busy professionals to continue their careers while earning a practitioner-scholar degree."

The Ed.D. program is designed for ambitious professionals seeking to elevate their expertise in multiple specializations, including:

  • Adult & Higher Education Leadership
  • P–12 Administrative Leadership
  • Educational Technology Leadership
  • Exceptional Child Leadership
  • Career and Technical Education

"Graduates of Morehead State's Ed.D. program have gone on to serve as principals, district administrators, superintendents, higher education leaders, and innovative educational practitioners who shape policy and practice at multiple levels," Simpson said. "They exemplify the program's goal of preparing reflective, data-driven leaders who can drive lasting improvements in student achievement and institutional effectiveness."

Simpson said the ideal candidates for the Ed.D. program are experienced educators and instructional leaders in K-12, higher education, adult education, or technical fields eager to deepen their leadership practice, expand their impact, and contribute to meaningful educational change.

"Morehead State's Ed.D. in Educational Leadership stands as both a beacon and a bridge, empowering seasoned educators and aspiring leaders from across eastern Kentucky and the Commonwealth to tackle real educational challenges with scholarly rigor and practical insight," he said. "By cultivating highly skilled leaders rooted in the unique needs of our region, the program not only strengthens Morehead State's mission but also elevates the quality of learning and leadership throughout local schools, colleges, and communities."

The two-part admission process for the Ed.D. program includes:

  • Graduate School application
  • Master's degree documentation
  • Professional résumé
  • Letter of introduction
  • Three recommendation letters
  • GRE, MAT, or GMAT scores (optional)
  • Interview and on-demand writing for selected candidates
