Morehead State University establishes recovery resource center

Morehead State University has been awarded a Kentucky Opioid Abatement Grant from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education to establish a Collegiate Recovery Resource Center on campus. MSU is one of six universities across the state selected to receive funding.

The new CRRC, located in Rader Hall, Room 114, will serve as a dedicated, supportive space for students seeking recovery resources, education and community. MSU received the grant last spring, and work began during the summer to prepare the space and launch programming.

Lindsay Horseman (Class of 2017), instructor of social work, is the coordinator and will oversee its development and operations.

"I frequently encounter students who are in recovery themselves or have close family members who have struggled with substance use,” said Horseman. “It is not only amazing that we were selected, but also exciting that MSU recognized the need for this kind of student support."

Services will include support for students in recovery as well as those impacted by a family member’s substance use. The center will also offer recovery ally training, overdose education and naloxone distribution, and harm reduction education for anyone interested in learning more.

"The CRRC will provide non-clinical, recovery supports and offers a no-wrong-door-policy; in other words, if students are seeking help, we will be able to direct them to the best available resources,” said Horseman. “For students in or seeking recovery, having a physical space and an opportunity to build community with other students will be remarkable."

In addition to training and educational workshops, the CRRC plans to host engaging campus events and has established a student organization to raise awareness and build community. The center will be staffed by two senior Bachelor of Social Work students and one junior BSW student, with additional support from Horseman and a University of Kentucky Master of Public Health graduate student.
