MSU’s Burley-Coal High School Art Show opens Feb. 23

Morehead State will highlight the artistic talents of eastern Kentucky high school students in the 2026 Burley-Coal Regional High School Art Exhibition at the Golding-Yang Gallery.

This competition, juried by faculty from the Department of Communication, Media, Art & Design, displays artwork from high school students from eastern Kentucky and runs Monday, Feb. 23, through Tuesday, March 10.

This exhibition culminates in High School Art Day, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 11. This event brings over 300 students from approximately 12 Kentucky counties to campus to see the exhibition, watch MSU art students demonstrate a variety of techniques, and participate in hands-on activities in campus art studios.

The best 20 pieces in various categories will advance to the Kentucky Art Educators Association (KYAEA) state competition hosted at the University of Kentucky's Bolivar Art Gallery.

"Burley-Coal Regional High School Art Competition is the Department of Art & Design's opportunity to recognize the artwork of high school students from all over eastern Kentucky and the teachers who facilitate a creative environment," said Mike Bowen, Golding-Yang Gallery director.

"As director of the Golding-Yang Art Gallery, this is a favorite event of mine as it allows us to promote art in the region and allows our students the opportunity to work with high school students, showing them the skills they have developed while studying at MSU."
