MSPR launches programming and infrastructure initiatives
Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR/WMKY 90.3 FM) has announced a series of strategic programming and infrastructure initiatives designed to strengthen the station’s long-term sustainability, expand service to Eastern Kentucky, and support student learning at Morehead State University.
At a time when many smaller public radio stations across the country are facing ongoing financial and operational challenges, MSPR continues to move forward by focusing on thoughtful planning, efficient resource use, and investments that support both its mission and its future.
“As audience behaviors change, MSPR continues to make the most of our resources in keeping our listeners engaged, informed, and entertained,” said Paul Hitchcock (Class of 1988), director of Morehead State Public Radio.
Recent programming updates include expanded local news coverage produced at MSPR. Local news is now delivered as features, focusing on storytelling and in-depth reporting on people, events, and issues in the community. These features are distributed across broadcast, digital, and social platforms and provide hands-on experience for Morehead State students.
“Showcasing the work of our students will always be at the forefront of our mission,” Hitchcock said.
MSPR has also expanded its international news coverage with BBC World News, providing live, hourly newscasts and extended evening and overnight coverage.
“BBC is a leader in worldwide news, and we’re excited to bring this expanded award-winning news service to our listeners,” Hitchcock said.
Additional updates to the program schedule include Fiesta!, airing Mondays from 12 to 1 p.m., and A Way with Words, airing Sundays from 4 to 5 p.m. Inside Appalachia, produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting, now airs at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays with an encore broadcast at 5 p.m.
MSPR is also an affiliate of American Public Media (APM), expanding access to nationally recognized programming and future collaboration opportunities.
To support these initiatives, MSPR recently received funding through the Public Media Bridge Fund. This national program assists local public media stations during periods of transition and long-term planning. The award supports key operational and infrastructure needs, including upgrades that will strengthen signal reliability and help ensure consistent service for listeners throughout the region.
Looking ahead, MSPR is planning additional infrastructure improvements to ensure long-term reliability and longevity of its broadcast signal. These investments are intended to strengthen MSPR’s ability to serve listeners while continuing to provide experiential learning opportunities for students pursuing careers in media and communications.
