Lynch Scholarship assists Ashland-area business majors

The Morehead State University Foundation is proud to announce the creation of the David A. Lynch Scholarship Endowment, a new fund supporting MSU students with a drive to pursue higher education, like the scholarship's founder, David Lynch (Class of 1992).

Lynch's path through life led him to MSU as a nontraditional student. After graduating from Paul Blazer High School in Ashland, Lynch began working at a local factory, got married and started a family. After a layoff at the factory, he saw this as an opportunity to become a firefighter for the City of Ashland. As his family grew and his desire for a more stable career became clear, Lynch knew he needed to pursue higher education.

With help from his aunt, who worked in the financial aid office at Ashland Community College (ACC), Lynch learned to apply for specific scholarships to help him financially.

After earning an associate's degree in accounting from ACC, Lynch took a year off from school. He decided to earn a bachelor's degree and enrolled at Morehead State University with his aunt's help.David Lynch

Having to juggle working full-time and part-time jobs, and being a husband and father to his two sons, time management was a must. Lynch would schedule his classes all on the same days and managed a class load of 18 credit hours each semester while commuting to MSU. With one semester left, Lynch was 22 credit hours away from achieving a bachelor's degree in business administration. Because of his creditable academic record, he was granted special permission to take this course load in one semester and earned his BBA in December of 1992 at the age of 34.

"I had great learning experiences from many wonderful professors. The staff was always friendly and helpful whenever I needed guidance in some form," said Lynch. "The friendships I struck up were a treasure to my time on campus. I now am a partner in a small business in Ashland, and I am earning very good money as the CEO of the company. None of this would have been possible without my education and experiences through Morehead State University."

Several years after he graduated, Lynch discovered that, in addition to being a financial aid specialist, his aunt was also a philanthropist. Unknown to him, she was not only helping him apply for scholarships but also sending payments to cover his remaining tuition balance.

To show his appreciation for his education and to pay it forward, Lynch established the David A. Lynch Scholarship Endowment to support the next generation of Eagles from the Ashland area majoring in a program within the Elmer R. Smith College of Business & Technology. Just as his aunt did, Lynch hopes this scholarship will help support students the way scholarships supported him during his college years.
