KFAC hosts America 250 Exhibit

As America plans to celebrate its 250th birthday next month, the Kentucky Folk Art Center is doing its part to mark the occasion with a special exhibit.

The exhibit "Commemorating America 250 at the Kentucky Folk Art Center," which opened to the public this past April, is currently on display through Wednesday, Sept. 30.

This KFAC exhibit blends historic works from KFAC's permanent collection with contemporary pieces that reflect patriotism, heritage, storytelling and regional identity. The America 250 exhibit was created to help celebrate and reflect on America's 250-year history while highlighting the role Kentucky and Appalachia have played in shaping the nation's story.

Wooden pieces, paintings and other artistic media will be featured in the downstairs exhibition space at KFAC, and a brand-new wooden American flag by notable folk artist Minnie Adkins will be on display.

Tammy Stone, director of the KFAC, said both local and out-of-state visitors have enjoyed this unique exhibit featuring regional, self-taught Kentucky artists. Combining historical and modern pieces, the America 250 exhibit creates a visual narrative that honors both American history and the ongoing traditions of Appalachian folk art.

“The Kentucky Folk Art Center is proud to present a special exhibition of selected pieces that capture the American tradition to commemorate America 250,” Stone said. “I feel this is a way to showcase the creativity, culture, and heritage of Kentucky folk artists in this region.”

The Kentucky Folk Art Center is located at 102 West First Street in Morehead. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
