MSU announces naming of Greene College of Science & Engineering, cementing eastern Kentucky family legacy

Morehead State University is honored to announce the naming of the Greene College of Science & Engineering in recognition of a significant and generous gift from Drs. Randy (Class of 1967) and Judy Greene. Approved by the MSU Board of Regents at the meeting on June 12, the college naming will take effect on July 1. A formal recognition and transition will occur later in the year.

Randy grew up in Elliott County in a family that understood the transformative power of education. His great-grandfather and great-grandmother were forward thinkers who bought a life insurance policy in the early 1900s, when this was less common. When his great-grandfather passed, Randy’s great-grandmother made the deliberate and visionary choice to use the proceeds to educate her three sons beyond high school.

That decision shaped generations to come. Randy’s father became a physician and spent his career serving the Sandy Hook community as a family practitioner, and his mother dedicated her professional life to teaching.

Driven and academically gifted, Randy was accepted to Morehead State University without a high school diploma. Enrolling at MSU at the age of 16, he received special permission to study year-round and completed his degree in 1967 at age 19. He then attended medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California.

While at Loma Linda, Randy met his future wife, Judy. Their shared commitment to medicine and service led them to build decades-long careers as radiologists, practicing in Oregon and establishing roots in the western United States while raising their two daughters, Lisa and Amy. In retirement, they lived in Vancouver, Washington, and later in Henderson, Nevada.

No matter where they lived, Kentucky always remained home to Randy. To honor his family’s legacy and create opportunities for students from eastern Kentucky, Randy and Judy established the Greene Family Scholarship in 2021, awarded to students pursuing STEM degrees, with preference given to Elliott County residents. Witnessing the scholarship’s impact, they deepened their philanthropic commitment, pledging to expand the fund and further solidify their family’s enduring legacy in eastern Kentucky through the naming of MSU’s College of Science & Engineering.

“The Greenes’ commitment to increase their scholarship support for the region is transformative,” said MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan. “The naming of the college will continue to honor their legacy and support of higher education, and on behalf of the entire University community, we thank them for their vision and generosity.”
