Morehead State University Mourns the Passing of Regent Wayne Martin
Morehead State University mourns the passing of Regent Wayne Martin (Class of 1968, 1972), a beloved alumnus, former Eagle basketball coach, respected business leader, and lifelong champion of Morehead State whose impact on the University spans more than six decades.
Martin, a two-time Morehead State graduate, dedicated much of his life to serving the institution he loved. His leadership, service, and unwavering commitment to students, student-athletes, faculty, staff, and alumni helped shape the University's past and will continue to influence its future for generations to come.
"Wayne Martin truly embodied what it means to be an Eagle," said Morehead State University President Dr. Jay Morgan. "Whether he was leading our men's basketball program, serving on the Board of Regents, advocating for the University throughout the Commonwealth, or supporting opportunities for future students, Wayne's dedication to Morehead State never wavered. His legacy is woven into the fabric of this institution, and his influence will be felt for years to come."
Martin served as head basketball coach at Morehead State from 1977 to 1987, leading the Eagles to two NCAA Tournament appearances. He was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1984 and was inducted into the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. During his tenure, he mentored countless student-athletes and coached three future NBA Draft selections.
Beyond athletics, Martin distinguished himself as a leader in broadcasting and business, serving as regional vice president for Gray Television and president of Gray Kentucky Television. Throughout his professional career, he remained a passionate advocate for Morehead State and its mission.
His commitment to the University continued through decades of service on the Morehead State University Board of Regents. Martin served three separate terms on the Board and held the position of vice chair from 2016 to 2020.
In recent years, the University recognized Martin's extraordinary contributions through several of its highest honors. In 2025, he received the Founders Award for University Service, which recognizes individuals who have given superior service to Morehead State as employees or volunteers. Earlier this year, the University announced that its newest residence hall would bear his name, establishing Martin Hall as a lasting tribute to his leadership and dedication. The Wayne Martin Scholarship Endowment was also created to support future generations of Eagles.
"Wayne Martin was the definition of 'Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle.' His service to Morehead State was extraordinary, but more importantly, he cared deeply about people,” said President Morgan. “He believed in this University, believed in our students, and gave generously of his time, talent, and leadership. Wayne's influence can be seen across our campus, from the student-athletes he mentored to the countless lives he touched as a Regent, alumnus, and advocate for Morehead State. We are grateful for his remarkable service and will forever honor his legacy."
