Morehead State University celebrates the opening of Prefontaine Hall
Morehead State University officially celebrated the opening of Prefontaine Hall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and public open house, welcoming students, alumni, community members and project partners to commemorate the completion of the University's newest residence hall.
Named in honor of Morehead State alumnus and philanthropist Andy Prefontaine (Class of 1971) and his family, the facility recognizes the family's longstanding commitment to supporting student success and strengthening the University through transformative philanthropy.
“Prefontaine Hall reflects Morehead State University’s continued focus on creating opportunities for students both inside and outside the classroom. Both this new residence hall and the Prefontaine family’s financial support will go a long way in supporting our students through expanded housing options and scholarship opportunities,” said Morehead State President Dr. Jay Morgan.
During the ceremony, Prefontaine shared a message with residents, encouraging them to make the most of their time at Morehead State.
"It is an honor to have my name associated with this residence hall, but the true purpose of this building is not to celebrate the past; it is to support your future," Prefontaine said. "As you begin this chapter, I hope you make this hall a place of growth, friendship, learning and discovery. The lessons you gain here will extend far beyond the classroom."
Prefontaine also challenged students to embrace the opportunities before them and lead lives of purpose and service.
"Remember that every great achievement begins with a single step," he said. "No matter where you come from or what goals you have set for yourself, you belong here, and you have the potential to make a meaningful difference in the world."
A member of Morehead State ROTC's first commissioned graduating class and the final president of the Aquila Club, Prefontaine went on to become owner and CEO of Family Leisure. He and his wife, Debbie, have supported many initiatives at the University, including the Andy and Debbie Prefontaine Scholarship Endowment, helping create opportunities for Eagle students for years to come.
University leaders also recognized the many construction, engineering, architectural and development partners whose collaboration helped bring Prefontaine Hall from concept to completion. Following the ceremony, guests toured the facility and experienced the newest addition to Morehead State's residential community before students move in later this month.
Closing his remarks, Prefontaine reflected on the lasting impact he hopes the residence hall will have on generations of students.
"I am proud to support Morehead State and invest in students like you," Prefontaine said. "May this residence hall be filled with memories, inspiration and lifelong connections. Welcome to your new home, and best wishes for an extraordinary journey ahead.”
Prefontaine Hall is one of three new residence halls being constructed as part of Morehead State University's ongoing campus revitalization efforts. Together, these projects are designed to enhance the residential experience and provide modern living spaces that support student success and engagement.
