Morehead State University President Outlines Vision for Future During Fall Convocation
As Morehead State University faculty, staff and administration gathered before the start of the 2026-27 academic year, MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan shared a bold vision for the University's future at Fall Convocation.
During his biannual address, Morgan highlighted momentum in academic excellence, student success, research growth and campus transformation while reflecting on recent accomplishments and outlining priorities for the years ahead.
"Our University is in a period of remarkable transformation," said Morgan. "Together, we are building a stronger institution focused on student success, innovation and excellence while creating new opportunities for generations of students to come."
Improved Rankings & Reputation
A key part of the University's strategic vision is its pursuit of becoming a Top 10 Public Regional University in the South. According to U.S. News & World Report, Morehead State currently ranks No. 12 and continues to strengthen its reputation through academic quality, innovation and student achievement.
Morgan highlighted several recognitions that reflect the University's momentum, including MSU's designation as a Carnegie Research University, a distinction rarely earned by public regional institutions that underscores its growing research enterprise and expanding opportunities for faculty and students.
MSU also earned recognition as a College of Distinction in multiple categories, including Public Colleges, Military Support, Career Development, Business, Education and Affordability, reinforcing its commitment to accessible, high-quality education.
Innovation & Student Experience
Student success remains a central measure of the University's progress. Initiatives focused on retention, engagement and academic achievement have contributed to a more than 10% increase in graduation rates in recent years.
Academic innovation also remains a cornerstone of MSU's growth strategy. Morgan highlighted the launch of a Doctor of Engineering program, expanding graduate-level opportunities while helping meet workforce and research demands across the region and beyond.
Looking ahead, Morgan identified enrollment and retention as the University's top priorities, emphasizing the importance of attracting students and helping them persist through graduation.
Supporting those efforts are continued investments in innovation and technology, including the University's Innovation Center and an Artificial Intelligence Task Force led by Dr. John Nelson, dean of the Elmer R. Smith College of Business & Technology and dean of the Graduate School. The University is also conducting a comprehensive review of campus technology and infrastructure to ensure students, faculty and staff have the resources needed to succeed in a rapidly changing environment.
Continued Campus Revitalization
Morgan also provided updates on several transformational projects that will reshape the student experience and academic environment.
With Prefontaine Hall opening this fall and Martin Hall under construction, plans are moving forward for a third residence hall. The apartment-style living community will be built on the former Butler Hall site next to Mays Hall, expanding housing options for students.
Construction continues on the Science & Engineering Building, which remains on schedule with classes expected to begin in January 2028. The Multidisciplinary Academic Building, which will house business and music programs, is expected to open in Spring 2028.
In addition to academic and residential improvements, planned upgrades to football and softball facilities will enhance the student-athlete experience and support competitive excellence.

Throughout his address, Morgan emphasized two priorities: strengthening MSU's reputation for academic excellence and transforming the campus through strategic investments in facilities, technology and student success.
"As we look toward the future, our focus remains clear," Morgan said. "We will continue investing in our people, our programs and our facilities to ensure Morehead State stands among the nation's leading institutions while providing an exceptional experience for every student."
Fall Convocation provided faculty and staff an opportunity to celebrate recent achievements, recognize distinguished service award recipients and reaffirm a shared commitment to student success, innovation and excellence.
