Morehead State's Dr. Jen O'Keefe Earns Top Honor from Geological Society of America
Morehead State University Department Chair Dr. Jen O'Keefe has been recognized with the Gilbert H. Cady Award from the Geological Society of America's Energy Geology Division. The award recognizes excellence in research, education and service in the field of coal geology.
O'Keefe's research has advanced understanding of coal formation, paleoecology, organic petrography and energy resources while also contributing to studies involving combustion by-products and critical minerals. Throughout her career, she has combined internationally recognized scholarships with a passion for educating the next generation of geoscientists.
"This award not only highlights the utility of my research skills, but also my skill as an energy educator, and ability to work with a wide range of collaborators and stakeholders engaged in energy research," O'Keefe said.
She added that her research accomplishments have been closely intertwined with her work in the classroom, where conversations with students have often inspired new scientific discoveries and directions for future study.
"Ideas come when you least expect them, and in my case, new avenues of research often arose from conversations with students," O'Keefe said. "Morehead State University is unique in that faculty can become multi-faceted world-class scientists while also focusing on educating the scientists and technicians of the future. As I begin my new role as Department Chair of Engineering Sciences, I bring the very skills celebrated by this award to my faculty and encourage them to become their best teacher-scholar."
O'Keefe was recently named chair of Morehead State's Department of Engineering Sciences. Previously, she served as chairperson of the Energy Division of the Geological Society of America and President of AASP - The Palynological Society. Her leadership reflects the same commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship and mentorship that has defined her career and earned her international recognition. She has long championed opportunities for undergraduate research, helping students gain hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful scientific investigations.
The Gilbert H. Cady Award is named in honor of pioneering coal geologist Gilbert H. Cady. It recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of coal geology through research, teaching and professional service.
