Morehead State’s Lunar Environment Monitoring Station (LEMS) ready for flight on NASA Artemis Moon Mission
Morehead State University has reached a historic milestone in space exploration as NASA has officially accepted the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station (LEMS) for flight on an upcoming Artemis mission to the lunar surface.
NASA clearing the instrument for deployment puts Morehead State University at the forefront of America's return to the Moon. Through the University's Space Science Center (SSC), Morehead State developed the LEMS space-to-Earth telecommunications system. MSU will also lead instrument operations from its Mission Operations Center (MOC) and will serve as the instrument's primary ground station. NASA recognized Morehead State University's crucial role in providing the telecommunications system and operating the instrument once deployed on the lunar surface.
LEMS is a compact, autonomous science station equipped with extremely sensitive seismometers designed to monitor moonquakes, meteorite impacts, and other seismic activity near the Moon's south polar region. The instrument was recently completed, developed, and tested and is now flight-approved after successfully passing rigorous environmental and operational testing conducted by NASA and its partners.
"This is an extraordinary moment for Morehead State University and for our Space Science Center," said Dr. Ben Malphrus, executive director of the Space Science Center. "The fact that hardware developed and integrated by our team, combined with our systems engineering and mission operation expertise, will support a mission on the surface of the Moon demonstrates the exceptional capabilities of our faculty, staff, and students. This achievement reflects years of innovation, dedication, and excellence."
A key contributor to the project has been Nathan Fite (Class of 2011), who leads Morehead State University's efforts for LEMS. Under his leadership, the SSC team successfully designed, integrated, installed, and tested the communications system that will connect the lunar instrument with Earth once it begins operations. LEMS will transmit data directly from the surface of the Moon to the ground station at Morehead State.
"Nathan's leadership and technical expertise were key to the success of this project," Malphrus said. "The entire Space Science Center team performed exceptionally well, delivering critical mission hardware while simultaneously managing several other major research and development programs. We could not be more proud of what they have accomplished."
For Morehead State, the accomplishment carries an additional distinction: students played a direct role in developing hardware that will operate on the Moon.
"It is inspiring to know that our students are gaining hands-on experience by contributing to real NASA missions," Malphrus said. "Very few universities can say that student-built hardware will be deployed on the lunar surface. This is the kind of transformational opportunity that defines the Morehead State experience."
On Aug. 11, NASA announced that LEMS is the first completed payload intended for astronaut deployment on the lunar surface as part of the Artemis program. Once deployed by Artemis astronauts, the instrument will collect seismic data that will help scientists better understand the Moon's interior structure, ongoing geological activity, and potential environmental hazards for future lunar exploration.
The mission represents another landmark achievement for Morehead State University's nationally recognized Space Science Center, which has established itself as a leader in aerospace engineering, mission operations, and student-centered research and development.
As NASA prepares for future Artemis missions and the next era of lunar exploration, Morehead State University will be watching closely, knowing that technology developed in Morehead, Kentucky, by dedicated faculty, staff, and students, will soon become part of humanity's scientific presence on the Moon.
