Morehead State University breaks ground on new residence hall

Morehead State University held a groundbreaking ceremony for its third new residence hall at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the former Butler Hall site on Vaughn Drive, just west of Martin Hall.

Construction is underway on the approximately 40,000-square-foot facility, which will provide more than 80 beds in two-person micro-apartments. Each apartment will feature two private bedrooms and a shared restroom.

The MSU Board of Regents approved the project at its June meeting, marking another investment in student housing and campus vitality.

“We must continue to renew our campus and catch up on student housing. Investing in student housing is an investment in student success,” said MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan. “This new residence hall will give more students a comfortable place to live, build friendships and feel connected to campus. We appreciate the Kentucky General Assembly’s support as we continue to improve the student experience at Morehead State.”

The new building will complement Prefontaine Hall, which opened in August 2026, and Martin Hall, which is under construction and scheduled to open in 2027. Together, the three residence halls represent a continued commitment to providing students with updated living spaces that support their college experience.

The Oct. 23 ceremony recognized the next phase of that investment as MSU continues to expand its residential offerings.
