Morehead State Invites Applications for Prestigious Honors Scholarship

Morehead State University continues to provide an affordable, high-quality college experience to academically exceptional students through one of our most valuable and prestigious merit-based scholarships.

Morehead State is now accepting applications for the George M. Luckey, Jr. Honors Scholarship, one of the University's most competitive scholarship opportunities. The scholarship is awarded to a limited number of students each year through a rigorous selection process. Incoming first-year students are invited to apply for the award, which provides comprehensive scholarship support.

Recipients become members of the Academic Honors Program, an academically enriched program designed to challenge exceptional students through advanced coursework, research, service and global learning experiences.

"This scholarship represents Morehead State's commitment to investing in our most promising students and providing them with opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom," said MSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Chris Schreoder.

The scholarship includes support for tuition and housing in Fields Hall, meal plan assistance, funding for textbooks, an undergraduate research fellowship and up to $1,500 for education abroad. Honors students also benefit from dedicated academic support and membership in a vibrant learning community.

Macy Perkins, a sophomore biomedical sciences major from Morehead, said that, in addition to the financial benefit of the scholarship that allows her to focus more on her studies, she has found a sense of community within the Honors Program.

"I have met people I can relate to and talk to while we navigate college together," she said. "As a biomedical science major, my classes can be stressful and the workload can be challenging. Having other biomedical science majors living in Fields Hall who are going through similar experiences gives me reassurance that we can get through it together. If I have a question or am struggling to understand something, I have people I can turn to for help."

James Mann, a junior marketing major from Jackson, found a similar sense of community within the Honors Program and is grateful for a scholarship that provides him with an opportunity he might not have otherwise received.

"Going through high school, and even as early as elementary school, it was made very clear that college was only on the table if scholarships were on the table. I never took my academics lightly because I knew that my family and I could not afford an alternative path," Mann said. "I knew that I not only had the opportunity to achieve my dreams, but to represent the dreams of my community, those before and those after...I hope to make them proud and fully realize the opportunity given to me."

The Honors Program is named in honor of Dr. George M. Luckey Jr., who directed the program from 1990 until his retirement in 2003. A professor of philosophy at Morehead State for more than 40 years, Luckey was recognized as the University's Distinguished Teacher of the Year and dedicated his career to promoting critical thinking, academic excellence and intellectual curiosity. In recognition of his leadership and lasting impact on generations of students, the Honors Program was renamed the George M. Luckey, Jr. Academic Honors Program in 2003.

Applications for the 2026 Honors Scholarship are due Dec. 1, 2026. Students are encouraged to begin preparing their application materials early to ensure adequate time to complete the required essay, sample work submission and recommendation materials.

Students interested in applying can access the application packet and learn more about scholarship requirements through the Honors Scholarship website.
