Gunfire

It's important to understand that any action taken or not taken during an active shooter incident may involve life-threatening risk. Law enforcement recommends that if you hear popping noises that you think are gunshots, you should not waste time trying to validate your own perception.

We recommend you act on the chance of gunshots and evacuate immediately (if it can be done safely) through the nearest door or window. It’s far better to err on the side of caution.

FIGURE OUT

  • How are you going to survive?
  • Will you get out?
  • Is there a path of escape?
  • Will you hide out?
  • Is there a chance to get to where the shooter may not find you?
  • Is the only option taking out the shooter?

GET OUT (RUN)

  • Move quickly.
  • Don't wait for others to validate your decision.
  • Leave belongings behind.
  • To increase survival chances, go where the shooter can't see you or where the shooter isn't located.

CALL OUT

  • Inform authorities.
  • Call 911 and tell them the name of the shooter (if known), the shooter's description, location, number and type of weapons.
