Center for STEM+eXcellence

The Center for STEM+eXcellence provides informal aerospace learning programs for middle and high school students and students entering college.

The Center was recently awarded a $3.98M ARC Appalachian Region Initiative for Stronger Economies grant for SpaceTrek: Building the Aerospace Workforce Pipeline in Appalachia. This initiative aims to drive large-scale regional transformation through multi-state collaborative projects across Appalachia. Through this grant, the SpaceTrek initiative has expanded throughout Kentucky and West Virginia.

The SpaceTrek initiative includes the SpaceTrek Space Systems Program for Young Women summer program, SpacePrep Aerospace Exploration Workshops for Young Women, and Aerospace field trips.

In collaboration with the Space Science Center and the Challenger Learning Center of Hazard, Kentucky, the SpaceTrek initiative in Kentucky aims to empower young women to seek degrees and careers in aerospace and aerospace-related industries.

The SpaceTrek initiative supports SpaceTrek alums, and students of the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, and MSU media students by providing work experience, internships and volunteer opportunities.

The Center's programs provide opportunities for Kentucky students to overcome academic barriers including learning loss created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics implements a STEM+X curriculum that supports the Academy's tagline - Imagine, Invent, Impact Kentucky and beyond.

The Center's programs provide early access to the integration of +X outcomes such as videography, entrepreneurship, and service into real world STEM-based problems and scenarios.
