Service Animals

According to the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADA), a service animal is "...a dog that has been individually trained to perform a specific, essential task to offset a functional limitation of a person with a disability." Disability categories include physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual and other mental impairments.

What is the difference between a service animal and an emotional support animal?

Other species of animals, whether trained or untrained, are not considered service animals. A dog that provides emotional comfort, crime prevention, or companionship is not considered a service animal.

How do I request permission to have a service animal with me at MSU?

First, please carefully review KRS 383.085 and UAR 343.

A person with a disability is typically not required to provide documentation or license, have an accommodation on file, or receive prior approval by the University in order to be accompanied by a service animal on campus for daily activities.

However, prior approval is required if a person with a disability intends to have a service animal reside with them in a university residential area (residence hall, on-campus apartment, etc.).

If the service animal will live with you on campus, please contact Misty Litton, assistant director of student services (Disability Services), to register with the Office of Student Disability Services. You will be asked for documentation from a licensed healthcare provider, and the Office of Student Disability Services has the right to verify your documentation with the service provider making the recommendation. You can reach Misty Litton at the Office of Student Disability Services at m.litton@moreheadstate.edu or 606-783-5188.
