Social Work Admission Requirements 

To be eligible to apply to the Morehead State University Social Work Program, students must have met (or be in the process of meeting) certain criteria outlined below: 

• The student has been unconditionally admitted to Morehead State University 
• The student has declared Social Work as their major (Area of Concentration) 
• The student has completed 60 credit hours including pending hours (current coursework) 
• The student has completed all University General Education requirements 
• The student has completed or is currently enrolled in SWK 210 (or HMS 101/SWK 124) and SWK 230 (or HMS 102/SWK 222) 
• The student has an Overall Grade Point Average of 2.5 or greater 

If you do not meet all of the criteria, you should contact your advisor or the campus program facilitator to determine eligibility, as exceptions can be granted under certain circumstances. 

Deadline to Apply to the Social Work Program 

The deadline to apply is based on the campus. Students on the Morehead and Prestonsburg campuses will apply during the spring semester (February through May) and begin the program in the fall semester (August). Students on the Ashland and Mt. Sterling campuses will apply in the fall semester (September-December) and begin the program in the spring semester (January). 

Admission Process 

Part I: Students submit the application packet. 
Students should complete the following documents: 

• A completed Student Application 
• A signed and dated Social Work Program Statement of Understanding (attached) 
• A student Personal Statement (directions and format requirements provided in this packet) 
• A current MSU Program Evaluation or unofficial transcript if a transfer student 

Once students are ready to submit the application, they should email their faculty advisor or the campus program facilitator for submission instructions. 
Please note: Students will not be interviewed unless they submit all the required documents. 
 
Part II: Students schedule and complete a personal interview. The interview allows the faculty member or campus program facilitator to meet the student and review all application materials. Students should present in a professional manner and allow approximately an hour for the interview. 
 
Part III: The Application Packet is scored, and an admission decision is made. The faculty member or campus program facilitator completes the rubrics and Social Work Admission Record Sheet. 
 
The Social Work Admissions Committee reviews applications and admits a cohort of students based on scores from the Social Work Admission Record Score Sheet. The Social Work Program will notify applicants of the admission decision within two weeks of the committee meeting. The Program Director will send a formal letter explaining the admission decision via email. There are four categories of admission decisions: 

• Admitted 
• Denied 
• Admitted with contingencies 
• Deferred decision (Admission decision is deferred until the end of the semester)
