What is Hazing? 

• Not all hazing is done against someone's will.
• Not all hazing is violent or physical.
• Hazing is based on power. Group members use it to screen new members, foster bonds, or establish standing in their group. Whether intended or not, it also puts at risk the physical and/or mental health of their peers, sometimes with catastrophic results. The impact of hazing isn't just in the moment, but can cause unforeseen harm for years or even a lifetime. (Piazza Center, 2024).

How to Report Hazing

• Call 911 in an emergency. If the behavior of concern is happening in the moment and you are worried about someone's safety and well-being, call 911 from wherever you are. The dispatcher will connect you with the most appropriate police department, or call the MSU Police Department at 606-783-2035.
• Call or stop by and see the Dean of Students (606-783-2014) or the Coordinator for Student Conduct (606-783-2333).

Morehead State University Hazing Incident Reporting Form

Use this form to share information about acts that may constitute hazing by an organization or its members. The Coordinator for Student Conduct is the person responsible for the initial review of these reports.

Reports submitted through this form are also received by the MSU Police Department for Clery and Stop Hazing Act Reporting purposes. Remember, you should contact the Police if an immediate threat to someone’s safety exists by calling 911 or the MSU Police Department at 606-783-2035.

Amnesty

Students reporting incidents of hazing and/or threats of violence may request amnesty. They will not face Student Conduct Code charges related to alcohol or drug use or possession during the reported incident.

• Exceptions and appropriate options will be explored, but no conduct proceedings will actually end. However, details regarding the provision of amnesty will be maintained on file.

Morehead State University prioritizes the health, safety, and well-being of its students. A student who reports a potential violation of the Student Conduct Code, or who is participating in an investigation as a witness, may be granted amnesty for their own use of alcohol or drugs if: 1) The student reports the alcohol/drug violation voluntarily and in good faith, and 2) The reported use is not a pending/existing case or currently under investigation. However, the student may be provided with treatment resources or be required to undergo drug and alcohol counseling and/or education, as appropriate.

A student who seeks emergency/medical treatment for another student believed to be experiencing an alcohol or drug-related medical emergency may be granted amnesty for their own use of alcohol or drugs. The protocol also applies to students who are experiencing an alcohol or drug-related medical emergency and seek emergency/medical treatment on their own behalf, or they are the subject of such a request. The student may be provided with treatment resources or be required to undergo drug and alcohol counseling and/or education, and the parents of the student may be notified, as legally appropriate. A record of the alcohol/drug use will be maintained should subsequent alcohol/drug violations occur, and will be considered for sanctioning purposes. This protocol does not apply to other prohibited behaviors, including the distribution of illicit substances. This policy is intended to remove barriers to seeking help and encourage health and safety-related reporting.
