Energy Conservation
Morehead State is taking proactive steps to conserve energy across campus.
Energy Performance
MSU installed energy-saving controls and software to reduce energy consumption and costs across campus. They utilize software that allows us to track energy usage in real-time in all residence halls and most campus administration and classroom buildings, and enables remote control of thermostats, lighting, air handlers, and some chillers.
Occupancy Sensors
Occupancy sensors are installed in most buildings, reducing the amount of energy consumed for lighting. All new constructions have incorporated energy-saving features, such as daylighting, to reduce energy consumption.
ELECTRICAL, LIGHTING, AND HEATING/AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT (HVAC)
MSU is currently updating, either through repair or replacement, all major HVAC equipment on campus with asset preservation dollars from state appropriations. This will reduce our energy usage and save operating dollars moving forward. LED lighting is replacing older fluorescent and other energy-consuming light fixtures on campus. Electrical upgrades include new controls, IT infrastructure and other electrical components that will produce savings and better efficiencies across campus.
Natural Gas
MSU switched from coal-fired to natural gas at its boiler plant in 2012, helping to improve air quality in the surrounding area by reducing local emissions. Most of our facilities are heated by this gas-powered boiler system, which provides MSU with financial savings on heating and hot water costs, as well as reduced energy usage.
